THE SEVEN

By Kahless J. Hameed

The Seven stood, intertwined,

Not in body, but by mind.

One was cloaked and held a scythe,

The other, cold and distant time.

The third was feeble, bent with age,

The fourth, a storm that always raged.

And five, it sat in shadows, still,

While six indulged in drink and pills.

The last was powerful in its right,

Quiet, but an awful blight.

It watched its friends play their games,

Gleeful at the mess it’d made.

The Seven stood, intertwined,

Heralds of a deadly crime.

To steal a soul so young and pure,

As lonely as they, it is too cruel.

The burdens of their earthly chores,

To lead mankind across the shores,

Over the veils of the afterlife,

Where they’ll be questioned why they died.

And they will sing their woes, their pain,

But how could it be they feel such shame,

When they tried their best, and yet they failed,

When the darkness had so well prevailed?

When all it could have taken then,

Was a single note from a friend,

A kind word from a lover’s lips,

A familiar shoulder, companionship?

A mother’s love or a father’s hug,

Could have kept the seven away for some.

A lending hand is all it takes,

To make the rest feel like they’re safe.

And now the Seven linger on,

Watching a string of hearts be torn,

At another loss that they had caused,

And yet, they’ll never feel remorse.

For they, unlike us, are not human, see?

They are just our own adversities.

To fight them long, it can’t be done,

But we can help our friends hold on.

A bitter battle, an endless war,

But tell them they could always call.

Show them brightness in a day,

And help them chase the dark away.
