ON MY JOURNEY TO BE MORE ON TREND WITH MY FASHION CHOICES THIS YEAR, I’VE DISCOVERED THAT WHILE IT’S NICE TO HAVE A WARDROBE FILLED WITH DESIGNER CLOTHES, WHAT MATTERS THE MOST IS IF YOU HAVE A FEW STAPLE PIECES OF CLOTHING AND KNOWING HOW TO STYLE THEM. AS A WELL-KNOWN SHOPAHOLIC IN MY SOCIAL CIRCLE, I DID A LOT OF ONLINE SHOPPING (LET’S CALL IT RESEARCH FOR THIS COLUMN) WHILE STAYING INDOORS, WHICH DIDN’T HELP MY BANK ACCOUNT BUT NOW I KNOW WHAT EXACTLY IS ON TREND AND WHAT’S NOT! WHILE ‘RESEARCHING’, I CAME ACROSS THE PASTEL TREND AND A PIECE OF CLOTHING THAT IS WELL SUITED FOR THE BLISTERING SRI LANKAN WEATHER – MAXIES

What’s trending?

On my journey to be more on trend with my fashion choices this year, I’ve discovered that while it’s nice to have a wardrobe filled with designer clothes, what matters the most is if you have a few staple pieces of clothing and knowing how to style them. As a well known shopaholic in my social circle, I did a lot of online shopping (lets call it research for this column) while staying indoors, which didn’t help my bank account BUT now I know what exactly is on trend and what’s not! While ‘researching’, I came across the pastel trend and a piece of clothing that is well suited for the blistering Sri Lankan weather – maxxies!

 Maxxies

When it comes to dressing in this heat, maxi dresses are sort of a no-brainer. From the effortless ease of putting one on to their floor-grazing hemlines, they have the magical ability to style themselves. The length lends an elegant polish that makes it perfect for even more formal occasions. In fact, we can’t think of a use case that an easy-breezy maxi dress isn’t appropriate for—from walks in the park teamed with your favourite flats or sneakers to summer sundowners on your friends’ terrace in heels.

How to style a maxi

  • Try it with trainers and an everyday handbag or opt for casual flat sandals and a pair of sunglasses for two classic daytime looks. If you want to wear your maxi dress to work, simply smarten it up with a blazer, belt and ankle boots.
  • Adding jewelry –

A full-length dress deserves full-length earrings. If you’re rocking a printed maxi, try metallic pieces like gold dangle earrings and bracelets . Summer necklaces like shell-inspired pendants and bright colors, also look great this time of year. If you’re running errands in town or heading for lunch with friends, then simplicity is key. Keep it subtle by styling your maxi dress with a simple bracelet, stud earrings and long necklace. Opt for a shoulder or tote bag to keep your look casual and chic.

  • Shoes to Wear with a Maxi Dress –

Ankle length dresses can be paired with flat shoes, but longer floor length dresses should be worn with heels. Maxi dresses are known for comfort though, so choose shoes that you would be the most comfortable in.Sneakers are another option if you’re opting for something casual!

Strappy sandals and maxi dresses give off a breezy, bohemian look which is also on trend these days. Choose sandals with details such as frills or gems for a more stylish look.

Pastel Hues!

Who doesn’t like wearing pastel clothing? They are ladylike and sweet looking hues that can be incorporated with almost any color. Believe me, this is a perfect choice for creating a lovely OOTD. This color can be mixed and matched with other pastels, as well as neutral hues. No matter, if you are an edgy girl or classy lady, there are easy ways to make this ethereal light hues work for you. They are totally in this year. We see soft shades, muted hues which are soft and cool. It feels like pastel hues come with that special innocent and gentle nature. Personally, I find these hues extremely sweet, delicate and delicious.

How to wear pastels –

  1. Monochrome. Choose one color and stick with it throughout your outfit. Try it with one of spring’s other big trends. A risqué crop top looks sophisticated in a light pink color.

2.Mixed Pastels.

Pair a few different pastel colors together for a soft yet bold look.

  1. With Neutrals.

Make your pastel piece pop by keeping the rest of your color palette simple.

To give you a feel of what does and doesn’t work, here are a few of our favorite three-color combinations:

  • Beige, Brown, Dark Brown: Warm and Reliable. …
  • Blue, Yellow, Green: Youthful and Wise. …
  • Dark Blue, Turquoise, Beige: Confident and Creative. …
  • Blue, Red, Yellow: Funky and Radiant.
