Run For Their Lives
What is “Run for Their Lives”?
Run For Their Lives (RFTL) is more than a charity run; since its inception in 2010, it has established its image as a social gathering for like-minded individuals eager to aid those in dire need of assistance. It was inaugurated 10 years ago by a few passionate youngsters of the Rotaract Club of Colombo Uptown, and to this day the passion remains the same. While Sri Lanka’s awareness regarding cancer and research is limited, there has been an influx of recorded patients in the past few years. While the authorities are doing their best to provide free medical care for all, timely medication is not always available due to a lack of funding and a lack of awareness regarding early detection. Thus, the idea behind taking awareness to the streets arose! Each year, the organizers strive to identify the expanding needs of the Apeksha Cancer Institute in Maharagama in order to provide donations where they are most needed. Using the collection of funds from RFTL 2016, a specialized walk-in cold storage unit for medicine was built. In 2017 and 2018, urgent medication needs were fulfilled on request, along with providing larger medical equipment. Each year, the donation differs based on the pressing requirements of the hospital.
From humble beginnings, it has evolved into Sri Lanka’s largest annual charity run.
The run has evolved from its humble beginnings to become the club’s signature project. Over the last nine years, RFTL has become the largest annual charity run that attracts over 4500 like-minded individuals each year. The club looks back in pride, as no obstacle has shunned the growth of this beautiful endeavor, and the lives impacted by the funds raised are a testament to the need it fulfills. The organizers plan every detail, from logistics to public relations to décor on the day of the run. This has been possible through the help of our supporters, runners, sponsors, and donors.
For many years, they have been attracting runners who run in memory of a family member affected by cancer, to support a friend, or because of their own personal experience. This is the prime motivation of their support system because RFTL is proof that the smallest act of caring shouldn’t be underestimated. Each and every one of us has the potential to turn a life around. Small acts of kindness multiplied by thousands have transformed many lives. After all, no one fights alone!
